Why the Paladin Seals of Command Bug Needed To Be Fixed

As some of you may have already seen in your own raid groups, Paladins were able to capitalize on an unintended interaction between
Sceau de piété
,
Sceaux d'autorité
, and the
Petite abomination en bouteille
trinket after the Cataclysm Classic pre-patch launched. This allowed Paladins to deal unfathomable amounts of damage, to the point where the number calculations would often freeze or crash the game.
While this isn't the only bug that the pre-patch launched with, the
Sceaux d'autorité
bug was quite literally game-breaking, both in terms of causing performance issues when triggered, as well as completely trivializing content (with some Paladins even going as far as being able to solo mobs in Icecrown Citadel).
With the bug already fixed by Blizzard
, we wanted to break down exactly how it functioned, and what the cause of it was. The pre-patch changed certain Paladin talents, and one of them was
Sceaux d'autorité
, which was previously an active Seal players could use. Instead, it now adds damage to existing seals when they trigger, such as
Sceau de piété
, where it turns the damage proc into an AoE damage proc.
This interaction alone wasn't the problem - the third and final contributor to this bug was a trinket:
Petite abomination en bouteille
.
Seals have the ability to proc the effect of this trinket, causing you to have the chance to gain a mote when your seals do damage. This means that every time
Sceau de piété
dealt AoE damage through
Sceaux d'autorité
, along with spells like
Tempête divine
and
Colère divine
, Paladins would have the chance to gain a mote towards the extra melee swing the trinket grants, for every mob it hit. The interaction doesn't end here, however, as the extra swing granted by the trinket would then further proc the
Sceau de piété
and
Sceaux d'autorité
, which would further grant motes, and it would essentially continue in a rapid explosion of damage that, in some cases, would quite literally deal millions of damage in less than a second. The screenshot below shows a mere fraction of the total number of procs that took place in an Icecrown Citadel Heroic log, and it's worth noting that all of these procs happened within the same 0.001 seconds.
For context, the screenshot below shows this player breaking 2,000,000 DPS with
Sceau de piété
alone, which doesn't include the
Sceaux d'autorité
or
Petite abomination en bouteille
damage.
Players who experimented with this found that despite the massive lag this interaction would cause, their games would normally simply freeze, and by the time the calculations were done, they would be standing in a pack of corpses, meaning that the damage just continued rolling over until the enemies were dead.
On fellow Wowhead writer
Surveillant's
stream, where he was testing the bug, you can see his game clearly freezing when attempting to clear the packs, but the damage continues to roll over despite the game lagging, and once he is able to move again, both he and the pack of mobs are dead.
This stream contains mature language at certain points.
We also have an outsider's perspective on the bug, where
Alaundoh
watched a Retribution Paladin in his raid deal massive amounts of damage to the Sindragosa trash. This allows us to clearly watch the damage meters as the bug goes into action, rather than a frozen screen.

It's no secret that multiple classes are experiencing a number of bugs and unintended interactions across the Cataclysm Classic pre-patch, but examples like this Paladin interaction are a good example of a fun, but "must-be-fixed" bug. Players often view pre-patch periods as a time to experiment and enjoy breezing through content, and class-balancing can often be somewhat out of the usual standard due to changes that will be reigned in with the next expansion's release, but this bug is truly the definition of game-breaking. While some specializations are able to solo current content, albeit slowly, this is normally just a product of over-gearing and investing large periods of time to whittle down a boss' health. Being able to solo large packs of enemies in seconds due to an unintended interaction needed to be fixed as soon as possible, as it not only completely trivializes certain content for both solo players and groups, but also causes technical issues due to the damage calculations required.
How do you feel about the
Sceaux d'autorité
bug? Is it harmless fun for the pre-patch or a game-breaking interaction that should be fixed as soon as it's found?
