Every spec has been impacted with the transition to Battle for Azeroth, some more than others. Holy, however, has weathered this storm pretty well with a lot of changes that will improve the spec overall.
The Good
The artifacts helped to really round out and polish every spec. The loss of ours has altered the relative power of some of our spells, but in turn (along with a major talent tree rework) made our toolkit much more balanced and provides competitive talent choices. Some talents have shifted rows, some are former artifact traits, while others are brand new. The reorganization of the talent tree has created some competitive choices.
Mot sacré : Salut
is a brand new Tier 100 talent, and has had a lot of use in the pre-patch. Symbol of Hope is now baseline to provide you and the rest of your healing team with additional mana for a small channel time.
Esprit gardien
’s reduced cooldown along with
Ange gardien
’s reduction to one minute will help with single target healing, especially in a Mythic+ dungeon. We now have an entire tier dedicated to crowd control as well as baseline
Contrôle mental
, a great addition in both mythic+ and in PvP.
These new spells are a welcome improvement to a spec that is already engaging and fluid. It takes a good baseline playstyle and makes it even better.
The Bad
Our passive talents were replaced by more of the same, keeping the status-quo of limited interactive abilities. Divinity, Piety, and
Bénédiction
made for the backbone of the talents in Legion, but brought very little changes to the baseline playstyle. With BFA, two of the three are removed, but the new talents brought to the table in
Mot sacré : Salut
and
Ondulation cosmique
have very little activity to them.
Just as in Legion, Holy has few instant cast spells which limit our output during high movement phases. The talent tree in particular is a key point to look at when discussing difficult content like Mythic+, where new talents
Mot sacré : Salut
and
Ondulation cosmique
do little to bring up a spec that is consistently underrepresented at high levels.
Damage reduction also remains limited;
Volonté focalisée
can be tricky and even dangerous to attempt to proc in difficult content. The
Esprit gardien
and
Ange gardien
changes are an improvement, but full use of the spirit is still punished. The only other source of damage reduction is in the form of the talent
which shares a talent row with our only form of mobility,
Plume angélique
. Survivability is an issue on people’s minds when discussing higher level play; with all of the healing specs re-tuned, everyone is on a more even playing field but Holy still feels lacking without the ability to tank unavoidable damage.
The Tunable
With Tier 20,
Lumière des Naaru
, and Hallowed Ground, Holy has been able to cast holy words in quick succession throughout Legion. This pace will slow down going into Battle for Azeroth but
Etoile divine
and
Halo
will be meaningful casts to fit into these gaps so long as they remain competitive with
Bénédiction
.
Tier 15
This row of talents is the same at a quick glance.
Illumination
is still as potent as ever in raids where every bit of mana spent counts.
Traînée de lumière
remains powerful in dungeons where single target healing is typically relied on more, and mana is less of a concern.
Unfortunately,
now has no special synergy with
Soins de lien
beyond extending the
Rénovation
on the targeted heal; the cleave heal and self heal portion no longer extend
Rénovation
s.
Tier 30
This tier’s focus is on different forms of survivability.
Body and Mind has been replaced by
Miséricorde angélique
(formerly the artifact trait Times and Measures) which allows for more
Prière du désespoir
use.
gives a little damage reduction on our own
Rénovation
.
Plume angélique
has really reigned supreme throughout Legion, and will likely continue outside of some niche uses for the other talents, but the trading our only movement ability for that will be felt.
Tier 45
Ondulation cosmique
(former artifact trait) is the only raid style throughput increase in this row, which is odd when it is beside the more utility minded talents
Ange gardien
and
Vie après la mort
.
Ange gardien
’s one minute cooldown is a solid boost to single target healing where needed, particularly in Mythic+ dungeons considering tanks are not as self reliant as they were in Legion.
Vie après la mort
’s usefulness will definitely be reduced when the Legion legendary effects are inactive, and the circumstances in which it might be useful seem exceedingly rare.
Tier 60
This tier provides multiple options for crowd control.
Voix psychique
halves the cooldown on
Cri psychique
.
Blâme
turns
Mot sacré : Châtier
into an unbreakable stun.
Force rayonnante
provides a large knockback that was used in a couple Legion raid encounters, or to reposition adds, help the tank kite in dungeons, or give breathing room in PvP.
Tier 75
This tier of talents gives us different options that all concern mana efficiency in one way or another.
Vague de Lumière
helps us maintain spot healing on the move via free
Soins rapides
procs which will see a lot of use in dungeons.
Soins de lien
is overall a really efficient cleave heal and a great filler due to the built in Holy Word cooldown reduction.
Cercle de soins
is a smart heal, instant cast, and more efficient than
Prière de soins
.
Tier 90
This row is the first that is focused on raw throughput increases.
Bénédiction
depends entirely on casting
Prière de guérison
as much as possible. The proc chance has been reduced slightly from it’s Legion version, and there are no artifact traits to amplify its effect, but it’s still a decent talent.
Etoile divine
and
Halo
are both really efficient and help our DPS a bit too.
Halo
is great anywhere extra adds won’t be inadvertently pulled;
Etoile divine
will shine where you want to avoid pulling extra adds, or on stacked groups.
Tier 100
Another tier with different throughput options; these really depend on the damage patterns. All are looking to be good choices.
Lumière des Naaru
lets us reduce Holy Word cooldowns quicker and provides higher consistent healing.
Apothéose
has been reduced in both duration and cooldown allowing it to fit into damage patterns easier and can be used for DPS when a healing burst isn’t required.
Mot sacré : Salut
is a brand new heavy hitting cooldown and scales really well in larger raids, but it’s long cooldown may be difficult to reduce to a respectable time to get a second cast during shorter encounters.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the majority of the current Holy Priest toolkit will carry over into Battle for Azeroth. While the loss of some talents and the Legion artifact traits may make the spec feel a bit slower to play, the tuning so far is looking to offer more flexible choices and decision making. We are gaining quite a bit with legacy talents,
Etoile divine
,
Halo
, and
Cercle de soins
are making a comeback. A new arrival in
Mot sacré : Salut
, a much needed adjustment to a better designed
Apothéose
, and an entire row dedicated to crowd control options all lead to an even more flexible spec (with real choices) than in Legion.
