audio points to an upcoming reunion between Alleria, Veressa, and Sylvanas:
My heart soars to return to Azeroth alongside Arator and Turalyon. To see the forests of my homeland once again.
Vereesa told me what has befallen Sylvanas. Though I dread the meeting, I must see with my own eyes what she has become.
Is she even my sister anymore? Or some Light-forsaken monster?
But of course, I have changed as well. The powers at my command may cause some to question my loyalties.
<Alleria draws in a long breath.>
I must remain calm, focused. There is much to ponder..."
"Alleria has changed. She wields powers I do not fully comprehend. But in her heart, she remains my beloved sister. I know it.
The news of Sylvanas weighs heavily upon her. There are matters to be settled... face to face.
The Windrunner sisters must meet. And there is only one place it can be done."
Alleria and Vereesa are finally reunited in Patch 7.3, and discuss Sylvanas:
: I must know, Vereesa. What fate befell our sister?
: Give me a moment. I will do my best to explain...
: Impossible! I refuse to believe she now leads the Horde. Not after all they did to our people during the war.
: There is more. I... I am not sure how to explain the rest. Or if this is even the time or place to-
: Sisters are complicated. Especially the undead ones.
: Perhaps we had best discuss the matter in private. Come, sister.
Previously there was an off-screen reunion between Vereesa and Sylvanas. In the novel
, Sylvanas and Vereesa plot together to assassinate Garrosh through poison. Vereesa also plans to abandon her allegiance to the Alliance and join Sylvanas as the leader of the Forsaken, knowing she would never see her children again. However, Sylvanas hid from her the fact that Vereesa would be murdered and then raised in undeath. At the last minute, Vereesa abandoned the plan to assassinate Garrosh and join Sylvanas, leaving Sylvanas fuming and broken-hearted that her one attempt to love again has been rejected.
The strong bonds of sisterhood are also clear in
Le collier de la dame
. In this quest series, you return the
Le collier de la dame
, dropped by Windrunner's Spire in Ghostlands. This necklace, originally a family heirloom, was split into three when Alleria went through the Dark Portal. She kept the emerald, gave Vereesa the ruby, and Sylvanas the sapphire.
Sylvanas first pretends it does not hold sentimental value:
<Sylvanas takes the necklace from your grasp.>
It can't be! After all this time, I thought it was lost forever.
<After a lingering moment the Lady seems to become aware once again of her surroundings, composing herself.>
You thought this would amuse me? Do you think I long for a time before I was the queen of the Forsaken? Like you, it means nothing to me, and Alleria Windrunner is a long dead memory!
<She drops the amulet to the ground.>
You may now remove yourself from my presence, <class>.
However, she then sings
La complainte des Bien-nés
in Thalassian (note, thumbnail does not load, but clicking on it plays official video):
In the short story
"A Thousand Years of War"
, we learn how Alleria and Turalyon have been spending their time with Xe'ra and the Army of the Light since the destruction of Draenor. In particular, the story follows Alleria's training with the Void and presents troubling visions of her future.
The first time we've encountered Alleria in-game is in
Patch 7.3 Argus
, where she is a major quest figure, leading the charge against the Burning Legion. In the chapter
War of Light and Shadow
we learn more about her Void training with Locus-Walker, and see her transform into Void Form in the dungeon
Seat of the Triumvirate
This story had a lot of interesting speculation, which we'll recap below.
Alleria and the Void
Several times over the course of the story, Alleria alludes to letting go, crossing a threshhold, and surrendering her entire being to the Void. While the Shadow flooded her mind with terrible visions, many of which she was able to dismiss as fragments of the Void, she keeps returning to the idea of self-sacrifice.
"You are ready, Alleria. Every ounce of power out there will be at your command. Dive deeply into it. Your mind will yet be your own."
She was indeed ready. But it was not yet time. She had witnessed herself jumping from a cliff, peacefully surrendering to the long fall. When the time came, there would be no choice and no alternative. Now, she could still escape. And her destiny demanded that she must.
Do you think Alleria could more fully embrace the void in a later Legion patch? We still have a raid, Antorus the Burning Throne, and several story patches left for character development. In one of her visions, Alleria even imagines herself pledging loyalty to the One who Slumbers, N’Zoth. This Old God has been the subject of expansion speculation due to an armor set showing maps surrounded by tentacles.
Alleria and Arator
Alleria’s love for her son is a focal point of the story--Kil’jaeden’s assassin threatens her son, and a grounding belief that saves Alleria from believing all the lies of the Void is her unwaving love for Arator. Which leads to another point of speculation--Xe’ra loves prophecies, and believes Illidan to be the child of Light and Shadow. He forcefully rejects this prophecy, shattering Xe’ra. However, this story shows us that prophecies do come true, such as two lights from Azeroth finding the Emerald Star...but both the Light and Shadow separately only catch glimpses. Could it be that there is a child of Light and Shadow, but it’s Arator, not Illidan?
Datamined dialogue for Patch 7.3.2 shows Arator's feelings towards his family:
"I found them! At long last, I found them.
<Arator's smile gives way to a look of uncertainty.>
The two people who gave me life... have been absent for all of it. I know they fought to keep me safe, that they sacrificed so much. And yet...
We cannot suddenly become a happy family. They know next to nothing about me, and I know only legends of them. We have much to learn about one another, and many wounds to heal.
But at least we will do it together."
Le Cauchemar d’émeraude
, during its encounter,
whisper players many different lines. While being recommended to not listen to them, as the Void only whispers lies, we're shown in the story that that isn't necessarily true as Locus-Walker tells Alleria:
The Light seeks one path and shuns all others as lies. The Shadow seeks every possible path and sees them all as truth.
and one quote in specific quote from
can be tied to Alleria:
At the hour of her third death, she will usher in our coming.
The story presents two 'deaths' of Alleria.
First to the Alliance and, specially, to her son,
Arator le Rédempteur
, shown in the vision that Alleria has of the innauguration of the statues in front of Stormwind.
The second one, to Turalyon, which can be considered either when Alleria abandons him to seek further instructions with the Void, or when Eradication tricks him into believing Alleria's corpse is at the engine room of the Xenedar.
Another strong hint that this quote refers to her is given in her conversation with Lothraxion, when she replies
I will, one day.
to him when he tells her that her mind hasn't fell to the Void. Maybe Alleria will play a pivotal role in Antorus or in future Lore, but at cost of her sanity.
We've also datamined
Patch 7.3.2 Audio Spoilers
, including a message from Illidan referencing the Shadows:
You have proven your commitment to Azeroth. Your dedication, your sacrifice rivals my own. But more will be asked of you, so much more. Even now, enemies gather, and the shadows grow darker.
Alleria's affinity for the Void could set the stage for Void Elves, a potential subrace speculated via 7.3 datamining.
Back in the Patch 7.3 PTR, we found several
and icons. Check out the earliest discussion on these weapons at
Scrolls of Lore, started by Hanclaw
Based on datamining, it appears that the model used to create the character for Void Elf calls for the Blood Elf model, but they share screenFileDataID with the Night Elves. Here are the silhouettes:
And here is Alleria absorbing the Void in the Seat of the Triumvirate cutscene:
Here is the void model of Alleria which she uses during the L'ura encounter in

The BlizzCon 2017 floor plan displays a Sylvanas statue in front of the large WoW demo area. This is the first time a Sylvanas statue will be displayed at BlizzCon.
There is also a fashionable
Sylvanas short-sleeved hoodie
for sale. However, Sylvanas merchandise is
throughout the years, so the inclusion may not specifically point to anything related to the expansion. We've seen Sylvanas hoodies, dresses, figurines, and more before.
, Sylvanas' former lieutenant, betrayed the Horde in
La bataille pour Fossoyeuse
. As punishment for not succeeding at destroying Sylvanas and the Horde, Varimathras is now locked up and tortured by the Coven of the Shivarra. He has some
for the Alliance and the Horde:
Varimathras: So, your Alliance still endures. Longer than I expected, though she has already planted the seeds of its downfall. She is patient, that one.
Varimathras: When your thrones run red with betrayal... when your holy places burn and the shattered mask hangs above your hearth... only then you will know. And it will be too late.
Varimathras: It matters not. You are blind to the true darkness closing in around you.
The "Shattered Mask" refers to the Forsaken logo, and the "seeds of its downfall" could refer to Sylvanas trying to convince Vereesa to join the Horde, or the distrust sowed by the Alliance thinking Sylvanas abandoned the Horde...or Varimathras could be lying. He's a dreadlord.
Varimathras: So, she found me at last. Sent her underlings to finish the job.
Varimathras: Tell me, when she seized your throne of hides and bones, was your allegiance forced? No... I'd wager you surrendered it willingly... or were convinced you did.
Varimathras: It matters not. You are blind to the darkness in your midst.
In this dialogue exchange, Varimathras is referring to his escape after the Battle for the Undercity mostly failed.
Varimathras: Better that you died here, where she cannot claim you.
Varimathras: Death... claims... us all.
Sylvanas in WoW
Sylvanas Windrunner is the current Warchief of the Horde and the Dark Lady of the Forsaken.
Before undeath, Sylvanas served as the ranger-general of Silvermoon. She fell to Arthas during the invasion of Quel'Thalas; instead of a quick death he turned her into a banshee to serve his bidding. While under his control, she retained some self-awareness which made watching events like the fall of the Sunwell even more painful. When she sensed Ner'zhul's control weakening, she made her move, retrieved her body, and freed herself from the Lich King.
In early WoW, players saw Sylvanas as the leader of the
, who aided the Blood Elves in joining the Horde. Under her rule, the Forsaken have expanded the catacombs in the
, with all sorts of plague and poisonous experiments.
In Wrath of the Lich King, Sylvanas was betrayed by Varimathras and Grand Apothecary Putress in
La bataille pour Fossoyeuse
--the plague she'd been perfecting to use on the Scourge was instead used on the Alliance and Horde, and the Undercity was seized. After regaining control of the Undercity, she then focused on her main act of hunting down Arthas, leading the charge in the
Frozen Halls Dungeons
. Upon completing the
quest chain, players are awarded
Boîte à musique de Sylvanas
, a toy which plays Lament of the Highborne.
In the short story "
Edge of Night
," we learn that Sylvanas' fate after Arthas' fall is more complicated than the simple in-game dialogue. With her purpose complete, she longs for the peacefulness of death, throwing herself off the edge of the Frozen Throne. She's not granted a quick death, but instead finds herself in a realm of anguish. Approached by the val'kyr who want to avoid being bound to the new Lich King, she rejoins the living and makes a pact with the remaining val'kyr.
In Cataclysm, Sylvanas and the Forsaken clash with Gilneas, starting a long bitter rivalry with Genn Graymane. She is shot and killed by Lord Godfrey, only to be resurrected by three of her Val'kyr in
Les sentiers de la gloire
. Through her pact with the Val'kyr, we also learn that she can raise humans as undead.
Sylvanas plays a major part at the start of Legion, but then takes a backseat in later patches. She's first seen in the Legion trailer, helping Varian Wrynn fight off demons. Shen then pledges to protect the Alliance as they fight Gul'dan, but a surprise ambush and Vol'jin mortally wounded cause her to retreat--an act which was viewed as betrayal by many Alliance. On his deathbed, Vol'jin proclaims that Sylvanas must be the new Warchief. Sylvanas then is the focus of Horde questing in
, as she seeks to bind the Val'kyr to her, hoping to learn the secret of immortality and save the Forsaken from an eternity of torture.
recent Legion Q&A
, Ion Hazzikostas said there was still more of Sylvanas' story to tell.
Vereesa has gained prominence in recent expansions, notably Mists of Pandaria and Legion.
Vereesa is first seen in Wrath of the Lich King
, standing next to her mate Rhonin. She is unfriendly to the Horde and the leader of the
faction, a group opposed to the inclusion of Blood Elves in the Kirin Tor. You can find the emissary
selling special items at the Argent Tournament -
Hippogriffe du Concordat argenté
Tabard du Concordat argenté
In Mists of Pandaria, Veressa loses Rhonin to the mana bomb explosion in Theramore. She is driven by revenge and fear of the Horde, similar to Jaina. She helps Jaina drive the
Sunreavers out of Dalaran
for stealing the Divine Bell, and accompanies the Alliance on the
Isle of Thunder
Vereesa has an expanded role in Legion, starting with the Farstrider's learning that Alleria's bow was left behind on the demon planet Niskara. You aid her in the
Marksman Artifact Acquisition quest
, and then she joins the Unseen Path of Hunters as a Silver Covenant representative. Joined by the other elves Tyrande, Liadrin, and Thalyssra, she participates in the
questline to free the Nighthold, which starts on strained terms due to Vereesa's distrust of the Horde. Elisande mocks the quel'dorei as "You are peasants playing at nobility, all too willing to mingle with lesser races that dilute your bloodline. You are unworthy of the name high elves" before imprisoning Vereesa in her time bubble.
Vereesa then travels with her nephew Arator to Argus
aboard the Vindicaar
. You can find her on the spaceship, and she is finally reunited with her sister Alleria.
