The Starting Zone
interviewed Chris G. Robinson and Jeremy Feasel, in which some more Islands details were revealed. Check out the full audio interview, embedded below, for more discussion on Highmountain Tauren, Stromgarde, and art direction.
Island expeditions are a new form of content added in Battle for Azeroth, a 3v3 scenario-esque content, with high replayability. Face off AI or even other players in the search for Azerite and treasures. Learn more in our
Islands Expedition Overview
Islands used similar tech from Mists scenarios - fast queues, role-agnosticism. However Blizzard has learned a lot, for example, the Island NPCs are much smarter and more difficult to fight.
Blizzard wants to play around with the concept of not requiring the 'holy trinity' of roles - tank, healer, dps. You will find a seafaring vendor on your dock every day who will sell consumables allowing you to fill in holes for your spec.
For example, one day your Arms Warrior could find a vendor selling consumables so you could essentially be a tanky Arms Warrior.
Or if you're on your Mage, perhaps you'd find items allowing you to become a Healing Mage!
Island rewards are not 100% set, but it is planned to be a major source of Azerite. There will also be Island-specific mounts, pets, and other rewards.
It shouldn't feel like an all-or-nothing system, losing to the AI PvP Team would feel bad. You'll always been incentivized to play your heart out, and you'll get some sort of reward even if you don't win.
Two Islands were previewed at BlizzCon 2017. "A lot" are planned for Battle for Azeroth release--once the tech is set, many zones can be generated quickly.
The AI system for Island NPCs is a brand-new tech--nothing like regular usual NPCs. One hot topic is determining how smart and unpredictable the AI is; it is very important to have lower-level difficulties feel fair. They have lots of variation, with different routes and strategies.
At the BlizzCon 2017 panel, we learned about some of the enemy champion teams, like Worgens and Trolls. In the interview, a new NPC team was revealed--the Blazing Sunhawks, a Blood Elf group from Silvermoon. This team can include a Spellbreaker, as well as two hybrid Fire-Healer Phoenix Mages, who are in love with each other, so they can also resurrect each other.
A lot of the storytelling is about making enemies that have personalities, represent factions, and have believable abilities. The enemy team still has homes, families, a land they want to protect. They have many unique dialogue options!
While you can try to avoid the enemy team, there are moments to clash. For example, on the Gilneas map, you start off at opposite sides of the map, but to get up to the Lighthouse, there's only one bridge to cross.
The creatures in Islands will likely not leash.
Lots of Achievements are likely on the way!
