“Open here I flung the shutter, when, with many a flirt and flutter,
In there stepped a stately Raven of the saintly days of yore;
Not the least obeisance made he; not a minute stopped or stayed he;
But, with mien of lord or lady, perched above my chamber door—
Perched upon a bust of Pallas just above my chamber door—
Perched, and sat, and nothing more.”
Hearthstone’s latest expansion –
The Witchwood
– just got released! Wowhead's sister site
Hearthstone Top Decks
have lots of useful information about the new expansion and wrote this article to help you out!
The new, spooky set marks the start of a new Standard year – Year of the Raven. It means that all of the expansions released in 2016 (including the iconic Whispers of the Old Gods that featured the first portraits of N’Zoth and Y’Shaarj) will only be playable in the Wild format.
If you aren’t playing Hearthstone, but you were thinking about getting into the game, a new Standard year is always the best time to do it – since lots of cards have rotated out, it’s easier to get a decent card collection, and if you start buying packs from the latest set, they will be available in this format for the next two years.
Not sure what to do during the launch? You aren’t up to date with the new in-game mechanics?
Here’s our survival guide that should answer most of your questions!
Setting
The Witchwood is set in Blackwald, a crooked forest just outside the city of Gilneas. Of course, while the lore is centered around the woods, we get to see characters from all around the kingdom of Gilneas – many of which were already heavily featured in World of Warcraft.
Notably, it is also the fourth “spooky” Hearthstone expansion, after Curse of Naxxramas, Whispers of the Old Gods and Knights of the Frozen Throne. Looks like Team 5 likes this kind of theme!
The Witchwood is the first set to feature multiple Worgen characters, with both minion and spell artworks. There is also a whole new mechanic created around the Worgen curse – multiple cards swap their stats every turn they’re in your hand (e.g. from a 2/5 to a 5/2). They also swap their artworks – with the low attack/high health version being a Human form, and a high attack/low health one being a Worgen form.
New Cards
Hearthstone no longer strictly follows the World of Warcraft lore, but it still takes a lot of inspiration from it, especially in the Legendary cards department. While some of them like
Hagatha the Witch
or
Toki, Time-Tinkerer
(who is a friend of Chromie, by the way!) are the invention of Hearthstone designers, we can also see a lot of notable WoW characters made into Legendaries. You will be able to put
Genn Greymane
,
Darius Crowley
,
Lord Godfrey
,
Tess Greymane
,
Prince Liam
,
Archmage Arugal
or even
Emeriss
into your decks.
It’s still difficult to say which cards will work out and which ones will be as good as the Arcane Dust they’re made of, but a lot of them look very promising!

Potential Decks
The first few days of the expansion are always very chaotic. Theorycrafting and reviewing cards are one thing, but expansion launches have taught us that predicting a meta we haven’t experienced yet is almost impossible. Cards that we thought would shape the game might turn out to be useless, while the ones labeled “mediocre” or even “bad” by most of the players might turn out to be the next big hits. All of that can also be said about the decklists themselves, meaning that it’s impossible to provide the best decks so early.
However, while it’s difficult to say what’s going to be good early on, we’ll be gathering up the top decklists right in this post:

Monster Hunt
Monster Hunt is the name of the new PvE content from The Witchwood. After a huge success of Dungeon Run from the previous expansion (Kobolds & Catacombs), they’ve decided to do it again, with some adjustments.
The biggest difference, however, is the launch time. Unlike Dungeon Run, which launched alongside the expansion, we’ll have to wait two more weeks for Monster Hunt.
That said, thanks to the data mining of the latest patch, we’ve been able to create a full list of upcoming Bosses with their Hero Powers. Warning – it might spoil some of the fun in case you want to experience them first-hand in the game!

Monster Hunt guide with Boss List and Tips & Tricks
. It will be updated more once the mode launches, so you can also come back in two weeks for more information.
Witchwood – The New Beginning?
Many of you most likely don’t follow the recent Hearthstone events, but a while ago, there was a huge community outrage about the game’s price. On top of that, players were creating hundreds of threads, mostly about the important QoL stuff that should be added/fixed a while ago.
However, it looks like Blizzard has been nailing the Witchwood release so far! We just had a huge event, which rewarded players with a card pack for every quest they’ve completed (up to 16 card packs for free, on top of regular quest rewards). Witchwood pre-order contained 20 extra packs compared to the usual deal (70 instead of 50). Latest patch fixed a lot of small bugs and added new features, like showing burned cards (cards that were drawn when your hand was full or destroyed through the other effects) in the history sidebar and the update to
Deathstalker Rexxar
’s pool of Beast cards. Yes, those are seemingly small changes, but the community has been asking about them for a while!
Players can now also share their decks with friends when playing against each other – if you challenge someone to a duel, you can lend them one of your decks and play against it. It means that you can easily play against friends without big card collections and you won’t feel like you’re cheating!
While it might be because Blizzard starts to notice the upcoming competition in the virtual card games market Hearthstone has been dominating so far, we hope that this trend continues and the game will constantly get better.
