well, they might retake some of the city, but leave a big chunk *untaken* and then blizz will make a new instance from it, ALL YE FEAR THE HEROIC GNOMES

Add Goblin city with direct access to Org, and Gnomeregan with direct access to Ironforge, and I'm happy.Take away the portals to all cities in Shattrath and Dalaran, and make me even happier.
According to MMO Champ, the retaking of Gnomer, and the establishing of a Troll City will be done BEFORE Cat hits. And with the inclusion of the Ruby Sanctum...It just leads me to believe that Cat is coming in November, week before Black Friday. Also thought I saw somewhere, maybe the WoWHead Cat forums, that the Worgen (after all the phasing) would be leaving their home city due to flooding, and have a district set up in Stormwind. The Goblins, due to a volcanoe erupting, would be leaving their home city and have their own district in the newly redesigned Orgrimmar.Personally, I don't like the idea at all of races sharing home cities. Now if it's something short term, and there's a phasing event leader, or a raid later, that establishes a new home city for whatever race/races displaced, then I can go along with that. As for only partly reclaiming Gnomer, there's nothing wrong with that. it just means that the Gnomer instance is gettin a bit of a over haul, and be like what the Stockades and Ragefire Chasm are. I wish the achievements for helping to reclaim Gnomer were titles. I would totally rock out the title 'Gnomecoming King'.
Why not? They did for Sunwell.......
If they do take it back... I could be just looking outside Ironforge then..."boooooooomm....."I see a huge green radition mushroom cloud where Gnomeragon was.
I personally WANT them to take it back. The place is a pain in the butt. I say let them have it then seal the doors behind them.
It would be pretty epic if Gnomer became another one time event like the gates of anchorage. You know? Donate armor and weapons. Kill troggs and lepers. And at the end? Gnomer! The new Capital city! However this would unbalance the scales. But what about Goblins and Worgen? They don't even have capital cities. At least none we know about. Yeah a one time event on a server would be awesome. Gates of Gnomeregan!
To be quite honest, I believe most of you are missing a major factor in the use of these cities; we'll be able to fly to them from wherever we are, and they will also be air-accessable. Alliance and Horde raids will be able to fly to the respective cities. This leaves massive opportunities for several things which I believe are key to Cataclysm:1. World PvP becomes much more integrated into storylines of quests, lore, and in general. A new PvP zone is being added, as well as several indications in lore. What was the rumor about Thrall being away in Hyjal to help as a Shaman? What was that about Garrosh assuming throne, but not Warchief? Did we not see him and Thrall duel in the Orgrimmar Arena of Champions? UH. We did. If you've ever played the ToC dailies a lot, you may have heard Thrall and Garrosh talking to Tirion Fordring outside in a scripted; timed event. He's very vicious towwards the Alliance, and is prone to combat. This could mean that if he assumes throne, there will be a lot more war happening between the two major factions. 2. Air-to-Air combat. It's possible because of the ease of being able to fly into the enemy cities. At the very least expect some sort of air defense, such as that in Outlands. I expect more from Blizzard, however. They've never re-implemented a feature as important as city defense without making some kind of update. I expect we'll be able to cast and attack from the air. Maybe even board your enemies' mounts a la the quest in Storm Peaks before you talk to Thorim? Who knows? 3. More phasing storylines, synonymous with more world PvP. I don't know what they'll do, per se, but I know they'll do something fancy with the phasing. I know it wont be just phasing, however. Perhaps it'll be a vastly improved situation like that of the opening of the Gates of Ahn'Quiraj. :) That was a Phase event. ;)
I heard from some of my guild members that the Alliance will lose Ironforge, but that could just be a rumor that they made up. Who knows it could happen.
