I am a lot more concerned about Blizzard breaking APIs to try to prevent LFG and having a bunch of unrelated addons affected (and a lot more work for addon devs to play catch up)Why don't they just ask you and curseforge and other addon hosting sites to not host that kind of addon and call it a day? There were announcements months ago that LFG type wouldn't be allowed, so it's a bit odd you are surprised and invested the time anyway (sorry about that part, but TBH, more sorry that because you did it anyway, it may affect my and other's addons (like RP addons))
A well written article. There is likely to be some friction at first with the culture shock that many new to Classic, developers included, will experience. That said, it appears that Blizzard is committed to preserving the Classic experience, so hopefully most issues are addressed and fade into the past.
You can't have your cake and eat it too. This is what you wanted. You can't pick and choose which bits of inconvenience you get. If you want WoW as it was in vanilla, then you have to take it as it was in vanilla, warts and all.
I'm mostly concerned about what they'll break as an unintended consequence, Blizzard is notorious for going from one extreme to the other after all.I didn't plan on using the LFG addon but I'm seeing friends say RP addons will be broken. Considering the base UI gives you so little when it comes to RP, RP addons are a great way to become even more immersed.
Removed The comparison to questie is particularly egregious because it is exactly analogous to classiclfg. The addon will not move you to the dungeon, the addon will not run the dungeon for you. The addon does not form a group for you you still have to form a group unless you want a group that fails instantly. And most importantly the addon does not do the most egregious thing that the lfd has done to destroy the social aspect of the game: protect people being $%^&*!@s.
I can't wait to see what this snowballs into. The back and forth outrage that's gonna come up if this breaks ANYTHING else will be hilarious. Blizz is gonna be playing whack-a-mole with their own "fixes" for months.
13,000 people downloaded it.... a couple hundred starting reeing on twitter... and this is how blizzard responded. Love or hate the addon that is what I would be far more concerned about.
Problem is a lot of addon authors reached out to Blizzard to get a definite answer on what was and wasn't allowed and got no response. Blizzard absolutely needs to talk to addon devs and outline things clearly, it'd head things off at the pass and save a lot of people a lot of time and effort in turn.
I don't think it's too much to ask that Blizzard clarifies what they'll be breaking in the LFG addon soon. So other addon creators can make sure their addons won't get smashed too.I suspect it will just be the auto-invite and maybe reading talents, so hopefully my much loved RP addons will survive the purge.
All this is going to add is add power to the complainers. first the LFG addon, next the quest addons. why not DBM and healbot as well. It will make the Blizzard forum even worse than it already is, with thread after thread of 'X should be banned now'.This action has let out the air of my excitement for this release, and I wouldn't even use the addon in question. Now I just fear what is next on the list.
I would like to mention. Playing dps back during bc and wrath, sucked if your playtime shifted and you couldn't do group content with your friends. I spent hours literal hours at a time trying to get a group together to do a simple dungeon. I never asked for classic, nor classicLFG, but if I can't get a group after spamming chat for 10min I will go play another game. It isn't the early 2000s anymore, I have tons of other online games to go to. An addon to alleviate that would have made me stick around since I had something to fall back on, heck without cross realm groups is it really even close to the lfg system in live? I don't think so.
Come on Blizzard, just disable all addons. No DBM, no Questie, no Weakauras
RemovedAs for the parts that Rokman got wrong, as to why this article "crossed the line": The add-on scanned any chat you were currently active in and organized any "LF" "LFG" and "LFM" and simply placed them in an organized UI. It also allowed you to "create" a group in said UI and broadcast that group in the chat. It didn't actually create anything though. All it did was create a simple pre-made chat line for you. No different than if you typed "LF4M for UBRS" - Instead, it typed "LF4M for UBRS - Tank, Healer, 2 DPS" for you (or whatever the dialogue was). It simplified the process. Everything was still involved in the chat box. It filtered the chat for people. EVERYTHING WAS STILL DONE MANUALLY IN THE CHAT. The only thing that changed was instead of having to wade through "WTS," "WTB," and general chatting going on in General, Trade, etc. channels, you could see all of the people looking for group in a simple and clean UI. Because of the lack of an armory, long range inspect, etc. there's no way to judge anyone's talents, etc. so you could literally just see their level and class too, which you can see from /whoing them just like normal. You still have to whisper them, just as if you saw them in chat. Everything was still exactly the same. Literally the ONLY thing this add-on did was provide a chat filter for people looking for groups, and allowed people to see all the people looking for groups in a UI, rather than having to wade through WTB, WTS, etc. posts to find all the groups looking, all the people looking, etc. It's VERY much in the spirit of wow, and very much in the spirit of classic. I was in Vanilla. I am not fond of the days of sitting in Ironforge waiting for a group to not have "NO HUNTERS" in their LFM UBRS run, or having to scroll up because 4-5 groups all shouted at the same time and scrolled someone off the chatbox. ---RemovedI have no intention of playing classic myself, I had enough torture playing actual Vanilla. But this change actually really bothers me because a lot of my friends will play Classic, and this add-on actually affected no one negatively, but people like Rokman actually got it banned because they think it did something it didn't actually do. It was literally just a chat filter. Then wowhead lets a news article go up to spread the misinformation even further, which just aggravates me even more. As you can see from the tweet Rokman posted, WeakAuras clarified that the addon will still exist, because again, they are well aware that Blizzard can't break the addon completely, because it's literally *just a chat filter*. They'd have to break the entire chat log to break it, they can break the use of a custom UI, but that's about it.
I support breaking the add on for 1 additional reason, to cut down on rage quitting. One of the biggest bummers of retail is groups treating members like they are all disposable. we have all been there, stepped on a mechanic once kicked, your group wipes once rage quit, don't like someone's DPS kick and so on. LFG,LFR and so forth makes it all to easy to fill a open spot, so easy in fact, if you don't have the unicorn group of your desires kick them all and start over. On the other hand if you have to work long and hard to form a group, you might think twice about throwing away that one player, or rage quitting that group that just wiped. yes it will be harder to form groups but that means you should work harder to keep that group together, god forbid you might even learn to "gasp" help them.
I'm still waiting for someone to articulate how spamming chat channels or /who the whole server and spam whispering every class you're looking for is some great social interaction. To me, the social interaction occurs after the group is formed and I choose who gets added to friends after the run. And I will still ask those friends first for my next group. I just don't understand the outrage, especially from the people who will NEVER need to seek out players from outside their 1000 member streamer guilds.
I'm so tired of all the retail hate here on Wowhead.
Group automation is not acceptable to the vast number of players wanting to play Classic WoW. Breaking this add-on is a good thing. To those critical of the decision you have a few things wrong or have misunderstood the situation...
Who cares about some shady addon developers? They perfectly knew they were developing an addon that would be very controversial and possibly even become mandatory for every classic player and ruin their classic experience. Good Blizz decided to put an end to their shenanigans.
