Personally I had a bit of a hard time feeling "heroic" when torturing people over and over again in Northrend. Don't wanna turn this into a political debate (or maybe I do, not sure ;), but it kinda seems a little "American" in the bad way to me... "Screw the geneva convention! We know we're right! The goal justifies the means!"-kinda stuff :)

How do we explain away the handful of quests that require us to deliberately torture others? Despite the fact that those who are tortured are, by all accounts, evil, as upstanding heroes of Azeroth, why must we stoop to such a barbaric level? But hey, with killing in mind: at least there are respawns. Right?
I like to imagine my shaman as the Historical type, calling upon the elements and asking them if it is alright to use their powers to kill or heal or hunt for their tribe. If you hit with a lightning bolt it means the elements approve of your descision and grant it worthy
Violent? Oh, •••• yeah. My Hunter is a straight-up life-seeking missile of death for anything in her way.Need me to kill 30 whatevers? I'll likely kill 45 before I realize I've finished the quest.Don't wander into my sights, oh no, if you're flagged, you're bagged, it's that simple.I'll go out of my way to kill things, or try to find inventive ways to kill tougher things.*RAAAAAAAAWR!*
I play on a PvE (normal) server, and I don't think of my orc warrior as particularly violent by in-game culture. I am the far-reaching arm of my Warchief...him da boss, him got dat big hammah, I does wot he sez. It's not my fault I was born during a time Horde and Alliance are at war, but it's my choice not to be slaughtered when the Alliance come marauding through (as no doubt I have heard they do). Gimme that axe, I'm gonna bust me some heads. And now we have Arthas preparing to bust down the door and set fire to the house. Well then, I'd better make nice with the people who can help me stop him. If I have to kill 43589702897508375 animals and 95349875349875 humanoids on my way to preparing for the day I can grind him into the dirt beneath my boot, then so be it.The same can be said of all my characters. The ultimate goal as far as the current overall story, whether I ever see those end game raids or not, is Arthas. Arthas is bad. I must better myself and make as many allies as possible on my way to stopping him.As far as 'torture' quests go, while I don't necessarily agree with them (nor do I believe my characters would take much joy in performing them) I will do them. We need the information and clearly no one else has the backbone to do it. Sometimes you need to get your hands (and maybe your conscience) a little bit dirty.
Hmm... As a player on a roleplaying server, my troll is violent , my forsaken is violent [er.. Forsaken!, even my gnome, being a Dumas-style Hero, is violent. Has anyone managed to figure out just how much total experience can be gained through (a) exploration plus (b) non-violent quests? In essence, what is the level cap for a totally pacifist character? It might well be much higher than many think. After all, that would include not only the "take this coffee to Frank there, across the room" quests, but even "find this object in an instance" and "cloth turn in" quests. Would it be higher if you include all the Opening The Gates quests for Ahn-Qiraj?
If you're red, you're dead. No exceptions.
